Indi didn’t have a hope of catching up to Philip. Not with his long legs gulping up the ground as the frantic fear she’d seen on his face drove him in the direction of Holland’s cry.

Still, she raced after him, her heavy breathing, the pounding of her steps over the hard ground nearly drowned by the hammering of her heart. And the pulsing realizations, one after another.

The jagged edge of the rocks. The ground still slippery from yesterday’s rain and last night’s frost. The fact that she couldn’t see Holland . . .

“Holland?” Panic—no, terror—vibrated in Philip’s yell.

Her feet skidded against pebbles and dust as she finally reached Philip. He dropped to his knees at the edge of an outcropping of rocks.

“Philip.” Holland’s voice, distant and weak, rose from somewhere below.

Indi lowered to the ground beside Philip, pebbles and sand scratching her flattened palms as she peered over. There, a clump of color on a jutting stone amid a rolling descent of brown rock. Holland must’ve slipped somehow and gone sliding down the slant of the bluff. At least it wasn’t a straight drop.

“Are you hurt?” A tremble threaded Philip’s question as he shrugged out of his coat.

“My wrist,” Holland called back as she sat up. “My knee.”

Indi reached over to touch Philip’s arm. “She’s talking. That’s a good sign.” She pulled her phone from her pocket, fruitless hope lost in an instant when she saw her screen. No bars.

“I’ll be down in just a second.” Determination darkened Philip’s gray eyes and he bolted to his feet, tossing his jacket to the ground. “I should’ve been out here. I can’t believe I let her wander a mountainside on her own.”

This was hardly a mountain, but now wasn’t the time to correct him. Not with panic clobbering every inch of his features as he surveyed the distance to Holland, probably attempting to mark out a path.

She hurried to stand. “What if you get down there and can’t get back up?”

“I’m not leaving her there alone.” He started forward, but she pulled on his sleeve.

“Maybe I should go. That way if she can’t climb, you can pull us up.”

“How, Indi? We don’t have ropes. We don’t have a harness.” His eyes locked on her phone. “No reception?”

She shook her head.

“Then run back toward the car and call 911 as soon as you get a bar.”

“But—”

“Go.” Grim lines bracketed his mouth and then he turned away, moving to the edge of the rocks once more and lowering until he sat. His legs dangled over the edge for only a moment before he pushed himself away.

Her heart slammed into her rib cage as she watched him land a few feet below, rocks and debris loosening underneath his boots and clattering toward the sea. Oh God, please . . .

It was the most she could manage to pray before adrenaline pummeled her into action. She spun, cold air scuffing her face even as perspiration trickled down her spine. Run. She moved as fast as she could, cutting through the cover of the trees toward the path that would lead back to the car.
