As with most able-bodied young men in the newly unified Germany, Brödel was drafted into the army and served for two years. His artistic talent spared Brödel some of the rigors of military service. Brödel spent at least a portion of his time creating drawings for officers and their families. Because the illustrations were for his superiors, he couldn’t charge for them, but he doubtlessly was treated better than many other enlisted soldiers.

After serving in the army, Brödel returned to Ludwig’s lab. The acquaintance with eminent physician-scientists from America forged there earlier now bore fruit. Franklin Mall, recently named the first professor of anatomy at Hopkins, wrote to Brödel on September 8, 1893: “My dear Herr Brödel… I hope it will be possible to get you to Baltimore.”18 Accepting Mall’s invitation, Brödel sailed for his new home on the steamship Dresden and arrived in Baltimore on January 18, 1894 (figure 7.2).
