‘You two first,’ Eddie told Jane and Harry when they’d convened back at Eddie’s house.

‘One of the men we followed was Mason who seduced and tricked Rose,’ said Jane, eyes flashing with anger. ‘We tracked them to The Wheatsheaf. Naturally we couldn’t go inside, so we waited for them to come out. They were only in there ten minutes. We think the second man was Mason’s brother or a relative at least because there was a strong resemblance between them.’

‘He’s his brother,’ said Dean. ‘I overheard Jessica telling the others that Mason was useless and Elijah Samson said he only employed him because he really wanted his brother.’

Jane and Harry blinked at him. ‘Elijah?’ said the latter.

‘Aye. I crept right up to the office and listened in. They’re dealing in weapons.’

‘Oh, great. That’s just what this country needs – a bunch of inbred fannies giving every numpty in the city guns.’

‘I didn’t hear exactly what types of weapons but there was mention of Berettas.’

‘Marvellous,’ he sighed. ‘Where the hell are they getting guns from?’

‘Either Jack’s involved and is using his own contact,’ said Eddie. ‘Or Elijah’s running the whole show.’

‘Which indicates Jack’s involved,’ said Jane.

‘Or Elijah’s set it up behind his back.’

‘The question is what do we do about it?’ said Jennifer. ‘Do we approach Jack?’

‘No,’ said Eddie. ‘No’ until we’ve a better idea of what’s going on. We need to keep digging, see what else we can find out because we’ve only just scratched the surface. This is a conspiracy and we cannae trust anyone but each other.’

‘And Carly,’ said Jane.

‘Of course but we need to keep this from her. She’s seeing Jack and if he is involved then we have to look out for her. If he isn’t and we tell her before we’ve got all the facts, we could ruin their relationship. We tell no one else yet, okay?’

The other four nodded, looking solemn, faces tight with worry.
