Under Her Skin

In the morning, while Ace finished our other cases and confirmed the information Tara gave us, I returned to the scene of the crime. I hadn’t dismissed Daisy as a suspect the way Ace had done. The second I’d heard she’d been released from the hospital, I knew I had to see her.

After an unsuccessful trip to her home, I learned from a man who looked as ill as Daisy had been that she had returned to work today. The store was still closed to the public, though, with just a few staff helping set up for the re-opening. I supposed she thought she could handle a day without customers. When I arrived at the Blue Diamond, Daisy was not working but seated at the tiny coffee stand and bakery outside Coraline’s, Café & Cupcakes.

Daisy looked pale, like a woman who might have needed to stay in the hospital rather than be out and about working. Her smiled faltered as I approached. She kept her eyes downcast, focusing on her tea as if meditating.

“Daisy? I’m Kait, I was here when…the incident happened.”

She glanced up and back at the table. Nodding, she said, “I remember. You’re the friend who was with Victoria Jelant.”

“I’m also an investigator trying to help with the case. Do you mind if I ask you a few questions?”

She held a hand out toward the empty chair across from her. “I’d like to help. I’ve been worried people might think I poisoned Mrs. LeBeau. Well, I mean, I did spray the perfume, but I didn’t poison it.”

I tried a reassuring smile as she swiped a piece of hair out of her teary eyes. Daisy opened her lab coat and reached into a pocket tucked on the inside. It was a concealed compartment that held a full-sized wallet stuffed to the brim with receipts and bills, and a tissue, which she took out. The inner pocket must be deceptively big. I wasn’t sure why that was important, but I mentally filed it for later.

“I’m glad you’re feeling better,” I said. “It’s a good thing you didn’t inhale too much of the perfume.”

“I didn’t inhale it. Some of it got on my hands. The top of the container leaked a little. It was on my fingers long enough that I guess it made me sick. The doctors figured it out pretty quickly. Arsenic and perfumes have a history.”

“Do they?” I asked.

Daisy leaned forward. “Did you ever read Femme Fatale? I just started reading the book on Lottie’s recommendation and it talks about the exact type of poisoning. A woman named Giulia Tofana used arsenic in a perfume—she called it Aqua Tofana. It made the perfect weapon for women to off their husbands in the 17th century. No one suspected the perfume. It’s fascinating, but I never expected to happen in my lifetime.”

“That is fascinating,” I agreed. “Lottie recommended the book?”

“Yes, she read it online. The writer was a blogger originally. She put her posts together to make the book.
