Chapter Eight

Could he trust God?

Abby’s innocent question forced Donovan to realize something he hadn’t thought about until now.

Trusting God wasn’t a one-time thing. Because he’d trusted God last week or last month didn’t mean he didn’t have to reaffirm that trust today and probably tomorrow, and next week as well. And if he trusted God, truly trusted him to lead and guide his life, this fear that grabbed his gut and squeezed so tightly he could hardly breathe, then that fear was wrong.

“I trust him,” he said meeting Abby’s curious gaze as his heart swelled with courage. “I trust him with my life.”

“How can you?” she asked. “How can you just let go and trust in something, someone you can’t see or hear?”

“I hear him every time I open my Bible, Abby. I see him in those lilacs and in the roses. I see him in Ariane. And in you.”

“In me?” She frowned as if he was teasing her. “How can you see God in me?”

“I see it in the way you comfort Ariane when she’s feeling insecure. I see it in the way you care for your parents and I see it in your designs. Who but God could have given you a mind to create such glorious things?”

She stared at him as if he’d sprouted two heads.

“I mean it, Abby. Who but God could have placed the desire in you to create? You should have followed in your parents’ footsteps.”

“Don’t you start.”

“I won’t,” he promised with a smile. “But you have to admit, you have a whole different way of viewing the world. I think that’s God at work.”

“Then I wish he’d tell me the rest of his plan because I haven’t got much time left to send in my project.” She glared at Donovan as if it was his fault.

And maybe it was. Donovan had never talked much about God with her. Until now.

“Have you asked him, Abby?” He saw her skepticism, but pressed on anyway. “I mean it. In the Bible it tells us that we’ll find God when we seek him. It also says if we ask him, he’ll answer. Maybe you should ask God what your next step should be.”

Whatever Abby would have responded was cut off by the return of the real estate agent. “Oh, you’re still here. Everything okay?”

“Yes, fine. How is your child?” Donovan asked.

“A mere scrape.” She tossed off the question and grinned. “I see your daughter is enjoying the playhouse.”

“Yes.” He made no attempt to correct her because for all intents and purposes, Ariane was his child. And it was up to him, with God’s help, to provide a real home for her, a place where she could feel secure no matter what happened. Funny, but wherever he looked in this house, he saw Abby as part of their circle. That wasn’t going to happen, he reminded himself. “I’m going to need a few more minutes.”

“No problem.” The agent nodded. “I want to check the timer on the sprinkler system anyway.
