Rowan stepped into the waiting area of the residence and picked up the phone. He wasn’t sure if his fingers were drumming on the desk harder or if his heart was pounding faster. “Yes?” Wasn’t he supposed to say hello? Panting, he brought a hand to his head and tried to calm himself. The run from the beach back to the house was one of all sorts of speculation. All he knew was that there was an emergency and he was needed.

“Rowan? This is Dr. Stephan from Adventist Hospital. I’m calling because your dad… he’s here.”

“Dad?” Oh no. Rowan’s heart skipped a beat. He braced a hand against the wall and leaned hard on it. “Um, wha–what happened?”

“Son, he had a heart attack. He’s been sedated, but we just thought you might want to be here to know what’s going on with him.”

“I appreciate the call, doctor.” His heart beat even faster, and dizzy, he tried to remember to breathe as he moved his hand to press it against his eyes. “Is he going to be okay?”

“That depends. What he suffered was pretty severe, and we’re not sure if that’s the entire diagnosis. So we will keep an eye on him. He was asking for you before, so maybe when he wakes up, it might be a good idea if you were here.”

“I’m in Thailand.”

“Yes, I learned as much in trying to locate you. But let us know what you choose to do.”

“I’ll be getting on a plane right away.” If his dad needed him, he was going to be by his bedside and help him through whatever it was that was going on. “Thank you for calling me, doctor. I appreciate all your help. Please take care of my dad until I get there.”

“Of course. Safe journey.”
