CHAPTER ELEVEN - SURPRISES

JUNE AKA QUICK CLAW

Five?

Five more of these fuckers? Great. Here we go again, and I’m still not sure I did anything to slow down the first one. I cut that thing multiple times—made it bleed from multiple incisions—and I don’t think it even registered the hits.

Maybe they don’t feel pain?

At least all three of us are in our suits now. It’s better than having no weapons. But still—five mutants? The most we’ve ever battled is one, and now we have to do this three against five?

How?

We don’t get any time to prepare.

All five creatures fly toward us—and Nik doesn’t hesitate. He races out to meet them. Alternating between shooting and striking, he’s intwined himself with the closest three, leaving the last two to take aim at Ruslana and me. She’s already shooting as she walks forward, and I want to remind her that bullets aren’t going to do much.

But I’m in the same boat. The mutants barely register my blades. But it’s better than doing nothing. And, if anything, it slows them down a little.

Maybe?

I have no time to figure it out. The fifth hyena mutant leaps across the roof, intending to pounce on me. Anticipating its target, I shift out of the way but fling my arm to its side, scraping my brass knuckles against its hip. It yelps and spins with a kick of its leg as I flip backward, landing just out of its reach. I flip again and again, catching glimpses of it moving to its feet.

I won’t be able to kill it myself. At least, I don’t know how to just yet. But apparently, Nik can do it with his Black Coyote suit. So, I just need to hold this one off long enough for him to snap its neck.

Ruslana seems to have the same idea. She continually dodges and rolls out of the way while counterattacking with bullets and a few quick jabs. That’s all either of us can do. Because these things are huge.

And fast.

And strong.

And we’re not evenly matched. The one I’m fighting nearly reaches me, but I flip to the side again. Landing a few feet away, I secure two blades in my hands. I’ve dodged for a bit, so now I need to attack a little, if only to start weakening the mutant. Allowing it to get in range, I swing a blade, slicing its side. Another yelp before it swipes at me again.

I roll out of the way and then to my feet, flinging a blade straight for its chest. The metal lodges in the center of the mutant’s furry torso, and it pauses. For a second, I celebrate the direct hit. But the creature looks down at itself. Slowly, it grips the handle and tugs the knife out.

Like it’s nothing.

Like it’s a splinter.

I hit the creature dead center in its chest—near the heart. And I still didn’t wound it? How can I slow this mutant down long enough so that Nik can kill it? As I retrieve another blade, Ruslana’s words come tumbling back.
