Chapter 14
Cael stood preternaturally still as he absorbed what Erin told him. His hands were clasped behind his back as he faced the windows. His posture seemed relaxed, but Erin knew him well enough to know stillness was often a precursor to violence. Erin finished sharing the details of the aftermath of the attack, including how she woke up in a hospital.
âYouâre absolutely sure it was Gareth?â Caelâs sandpaper voice carried a chill as he turned and pinned her to her seat with his slate gray eyes.
Erinâs mouth was dry, so she swallowed and cleared her throat before she spoke, âIâm certain. He threatened me, and when I reminded him of your rules, he said he didnât care. When I pulled out my phone, he took it away and threw me into a wall. . . thatâs the last thing I remember.â
Cael strode across the room and poured himself a drink from a decanter. The light clink of the heavy glass hitting the bar top was the only sound. The slight coppery smell of blood followed him as he passed Erin. He sat down across from her, silent as he sipped from the glass. The promised violence faded as Erin watched him processing what she told him. His eyes flickered between vampire black and slate gray with the speed of thought.
Cael leaned back and crossed his right leg over the left before he directed his attention back to Erin. âIâll speak to Marcus. I have no choice but to contact Araceli Palomo, the vampire that claims this territory. You didnât see Gareth kill anyone, therefore we can claim he didnât violate her rules. I donât have an explanation for how your bond to me was severed. That her people did so is an attack on me, and I intend to press the issue with her and demand reparations. This gives me the opportunity to test her ability to enforce her rules and protect her territory.â
Just like that, Cael turned a potential coup into an opportunity. Erin didnât doubt there was going to be a confrontation with Marcus, but it wasnât something sheâd be allowed to witness. Erin barely caught herself from sighing and slumping in relief.
Erin stood up to leave. âIâm exhausted, if you donât mind Iâd like to go home and get some rest.â
âWe will reestablish the bond before you leave. For your own protection, I cannot have you unbound. Phaedra is on her way over now, she is staying in your guest quarters. I didnât think youâd mind.â
His words froze her in place. Erin knew he was going to force the bond, but she hadnât thought it was going to be done immediately. She sat back down, her stomach churning at the thought of going through the ritual again. A spike of frustration and anger burned through her as she caught up to his last comment. Phaedra was in her home. Erin hated the conniving sorceress. Fists clenched in her lap, Erin tried to keep her expression calm.
âI donât need our link to see you struggle to keep your sarcastic tongue from lashing out.
