Chapter 14

The staccato sound of boots on hard flooring woke Raven from a light doze on the couch in her sitting room. Erin was tucked against her side, sleeping peacefully. The indigo sky Raven saw through the window put the time at just after dark. Shifting slightly, Raven gently nudged Erin until she opened her eyes. Raven nodded towards the door, and they stood and made themselves presentable for what sounded like a battalion of men to arrive. The door swung open, and several armed men stepped inside. They filed into the room and stood around the edges. Then the last person Raven ever expected to see skulked in with a smug grin.

Raven sensed the barely contained delight from Collin. She glanced at Erin and noted her carefully constructed composure was at odds with the anger and surprise Raven felt coming from her.

Collin inched forward, his face twisting in an arrogant sneer. “You look surprised to see me. Cael would have come himself, but he is otherwise occupied.”

Erin’s tone was light despite the anger roiling under the surface. “Collin, this is a surprise. What, pray tell, are you doing here?”

Collin leaned forward, his sneer turning into an ugly smile. “I’m here to witness your downfall, ungrateful bitch. Even better, I get to help Marcus break your friend while you watch.”

Raven’s heart dropped into the pit of her stomach. She barely stopped herself from rocking back on her heels, and the slight motion didn’t go unnoticed by Collin. He turned his sly smile to her. Raven quickly considered the implications of the brothers working together. She hoped her friends were still planning and wouldn’t run into what was looking more and more like a trap.

Raven asked, “So breaking the bond and subsequent betrayal are just bygones then?”

Collin stepped forward, lashing out at Raven with an open-handed strike. Easily deflecting his hand, Raven zapped him with a pulse of magic. He hissed and pulled his arm back.

“You will learn your place soon enough. Cael is always thinking of long-term gains. Something you ignorant fools can’t possibly understand. Marcus is happy to be unbound, but he can’t do what he intends without Cael. They have come to an agreement and Erin is no longer necessary,” Collin said glaring at Erin with evident hatred. He rubbed his arm and turned his glare on Raven.

“Well, I for one am glad all pretense is gone you disgusting piece of filth. Hiding behind armed men to subdue two women. A fine testament to your bravery,” Erin said venomously.

Raven stepped in front of her as Collin tensed. She wasn’t about to let him even attempt to hit Erin. She’d kill him first. Raven needed to lower the temperature and buy time. “Let’s dial it down a notch. I assume you’re here for a reason?”

“I volunteered to escort you to Marcus. He’ll tell you what he sees fit. Treachery abounds, and it’s about time it is dealt with appropriately.” Collin turned on his heel and strode out of the room.
