Naeryo follows the new target as if there were an invisible lead rope connecting the two.
The first time the horse encounters the target stick an initial process of operant conditioning occurs. As already detailed on page 26 you should hold the stick next to the horse’s mouth so that it touches it, either by accident or out of curiosity. You should mark this immediately with the reward sound and a treat. Given that the horse has already been conditioned to the click it should understand after only a few repetitions that the stick is what you want it to touch with its nose or mouth.

In the next stage of training the horse needs to learn to follow the target and to touch it regardless of where it goes. You should begin to move the stick around into different positions, first higher and then lower, and then between the horse’s forelegs so that the horse has to look for the target actively in order to touch it and earn its click and then its reward. You should only extend the distance of the object from the horse’s nose bit by bit so that the horse doesn’t lose interest in following the target. Gradually it should be asked to stretch to touch the target further away.
