Chapter 8

Eli reached Ryan’s house and paused at the door. He dreaded ringing the doorbell. His friend would demand to know why Eli had not dropped by earlier or returned his call. He would want to know how his job hunting went, and Eli was not overly excited to tell his friend how bad he had done this time around. He had been such a klutz at the shop, he had run into one of the large shelves holding paint cans during his tour and knocked over every single adjacent shelf like dominos when it toppled. It had been a colossal failure.

He moved to walk back down the driveway when the door opened to reveal Ryan standing there, still dressed in a sleep shirt and cotton pajama pants.

“You weren’t planning on leaving me stranded alone again were you?” Ryan asked with one of his ‘buddies for life’ look.

Sighing, Eli shook his head as if to say no and stepped inside with his bike. Ryan stepped away from the door to give Eli room to enter and waited at the foot of the stairs. He stood right under a grand glass chandelier that was probably worth more than Eli’s house.

Eli quickly storage his bike in the closet to the right, where he always kept it when he came over, and moved towards his friend.

“How did it go? Any luck?” Ryan asked. When no reply followed, he started to climb the stairway that extended three floors, wool carpet with golden trimmings decorating every step.

“Are you really going to stay in your pajamas all day? You’re going to turn into a couch potato, you know,” Eli teased trying to change the subject.

“Yes I am. My parents are out on a date and that means I can do pretty much anything I want until they get back,” Ryan grinned drumming his fingers on the top railing. “Let’s go to my room. I want you to tell me how your interview went, and don’t leave any details out,” he teased, his heartfelt smile making it hard for Eli to do anything but follow.

Eli stepped into Ryan’s room and took a seat next to his friend already sprawled on a bean bag with his long legs stretched out in front of him. Bean bags were so outdated and yet Ryan insisted on keeping such uncomfortable things partly to annoy his parents. Eli set his bag down and did his best to avoid his friend’s questioning stare. Ryan was quite stubborn and if he did not get what he wanted Eli would have to spend the rest of the weekend hearing him whine about it.

“I bombed it, horribly. I mean nuclear type of bomb,” Eli admitted after a few minutes. He turned his attention to the television hoping Ryan would turn it on and lose interest in Eli’s endeavor. The silence from his friend urged him to continue. “Let us just say I’ll be lucky if they don’t send me a bill. I basically toppled their entire inventory.
