European immigrants and rural Americans flocked to urban areas in search of jobs. Cities grew rapidly during the nineteenth century. The new American city had impressive skyscrapers, strong new bridges, and wide streets lit by street lamps. Many poor workers lived in slums, however, crowded into unhealthy tenement buildings.

UNIONS AND LABOR

In 1824, a cotton mill in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, erupted into flames, apparently caused by arson, widely believed to have been the work of disgruntled workers. The mill owners had recently demanded an increase of work hours at lower wages. Soon after the fire, the owners and workers reached a compromise.
