CALIFORNIA GOLD RUSH

The California Herald newspaper printed a full page article on December 26, 1848, encouraging people to come to the “gold region.”

While California had new settlers too, it did not experience the growth of Oregon until a remarkable event occurred.

The Herald’s article included a map of the area for gold seekers.

On January 24, 1848, carpenter James Marshall was building a mill for landowner John Sutter on the American River in California. “My eye was caught by something shining in the bottom of the ditch,” Marshall later said. “I reached my hand down and picked it up ... then I saw another.”
