CHAPTER TWENTY

More haze in the distance caught Gavin’s attention. They had been searching for and finding more creatures, but they saw no sign of the Forerunners. The creatures had been relatively easy to destroy, and each time they did, he had a feeling that some of his connection to the other power changed as they were cut down.

Those creatures were all enchantments—he grew increasingly certain of that—but they were a different kind of enchantment, and powerful in a way that those in his realm were not.

Gavin tapped on the communication enchantment, attempting to connect to the others, and there was a crackling sound through it. That was odd and a little unexpected. The enchantment had been working just fine, so if it suddenly stopped, that would pose a problem for them because they needed all their enchantments while here.

“Do you see anything there?” Gavin asked when the enchantment settled. Maybe the haze up ahead was somehow influencing it.

“Just a dust cloud up there,” Gaspar said. “That’s all my enchantments allow me to see.”

“I don’t see anything,” Alana said.

That was Gavin’s fear as well. It was dangerous for them to keep going without knowing what they were heading into and what they might have to face. They could turn around, and in a way, that might be the most sensible thing for them to do. But they were looking for the Forerunners. They were looking for a way to stop what was happening, and finding this was the first time they had come across something that might provide them with an answer.

“I’m going to circle overhead,” Gavin said.

“Just be careful,” Gaspar said.

The dragon lurched forward, moving quickly. As they neared the haze, Gavin focused on his core reserves and used that power to augment his eyesight. He had to push more of himself through that connection in order to strengthen it in a way that would allow him a greater ability, but it worked. Then he saw three more of the same gigantic creatures that they had already dealt with. None of them were looking at him, though. All seemed to be focused outward, as if waiting.

“Find anything?” Gaspar asked.

“Sentries,” Gavin said.

“Sentries?”

“Seems that way. I don’t know what for, but there are three more of those creatures, all just stationed and waiting. There’s too much of a haze for me to see anything around them, but they are guarding something.”

His mind raced, trying to understand what they were dealing with here. These creatures were waiting, but the other ones he had encountered had been moving. Scouting.

They had come as soon as Gavin and the others had crossed over to this realm. That suggested a real problem, that something in this place was aware of the moment they came over. It had acted on their transition. And if they had managed to do that, and had managed to create these enchantments to deal with them, would he and the others be able to withstand more from them?

“I think we need to know why they’re here,” he said.
