I read and reread it, fighting the urge to ball up the page and throw it across the room.

Instead, I set it back down, picked up my cell, and dialed.

“Hunter is an idiot,” I said as soon as Alexi’s tired voice answered.

“That, we knew,” she said through a yawn. “What time is it?”

With creeping dread, I glanced at the clock. “Just after six,” I said with a wince. “Sorry.”

“No, no, I needed to get up anyway.” There was a rustle, which I assumed was Alexi sliding from bed. “Evan’s already up with the kids. You’d think they’d want to sleep in on the weekends, but nope.”

“He was here.”

“Who? Evan?”

“No, Hunter. He broke into my apartment last night and told me about some pills and some anonymous text asking him to pick them up. Then he took the picture of him with Jonas when he snuck out while I was asleep.”

“Wait. Hold up and back up. What’s going on, now?”

I did a mental reset and then went through the night, just after my date had ended. Alexi knew all about that, so there was no need to rehash how my evening with Walker had gone.

“And he was gone this morning?” she asked when I was done.

“Yep. Left me a nice note, though.”

She laughed. “I bet.” Water ran in the background. Alexi’s next words were spoken through toothpaste. “Any idea where he went?”

“None. I can tell you where he didn’t go.” The police. Mom’s. You know, anywhere near anyone who could actually help him.

Alexi spat, rinsed out her mouth. “Gah. I couldn’t take it. Morning mouth sucks.”

I ran my tongue around my own mouth. Having not brushed my teeth yet, I tended to agree.

“We should go to Mom,” Alexi said. “Tell her what’s going on.”

“That sounds like a pleasant conversation. ‘Hey, Mom, just wanted to let you know that your son, Reginald, got himself involved with a guy pushing pills on his students. Oh, and this guy just so happened to get himself murdered the other day.’ ”

Alexi laughed. “Well, it’s a place to start.”

“I suppose.” I sighed. As much as I hated to admit it, she was right. Mom would know what to do. Or, at least, she’d have the resources and determination to find Hunter before he got himself into deeper trouble.

We just had to convince her it was worth her time.

“Meet me at Mom’s?” I asked.

“Give me an hour.” A pause. “Make that two. Evan’s cooking breakfast and I should probably spend some time with the family before I go. I doubt Hunter will do anything too dramatic this early.”

“I hope not.” But I agreed, two hours sounded good. It would give me time to come up with a plan. “I’ll see you there.”

“This is going to be fun!”

I groaned as I clicked off just as there was a knock at my door. Thinking it might be Hunter, I stomped over to it and jerked the door open, harsh words on the tip of my tongue. I swallowed them when I saw who was waiting on me.
