At Lavenham station, still euphoric, Peter and Clara went over it. After some negotiation, it was decided Peter would join at the end of October just after his sixteenth birthday.

‘I’m afraid it’s just a dream!’

Clara pinched him.

‘Ow,’ he said.

‘There, you’re not dreaming.’

Peter suddenly went red to the roots of his hair. Turning to see the source of his embarrassment, Clara saw the art assistant from Peter’s school. She was wearing jean dungarees, her hair was in a knot, her lips were bright red – she had a look of Rosie the Riveter. Peculiar, thought Clara, or cool? The two often overlapped.

‘Hi, Peter. Where’ve you been today?’

Six-foot-two Peter towered over her, but his body language said he was tiny. ‘London, uh, I won the contest at the comic place. I’m going to work with them from when I’m sixteen… I’ve signed a contract and…’

‘I told you!’ The girl was gloriously excited; she squealed, patted him on the back. ‘Oh Peter!’ she said, ‘You did it!’

‘Yeah,’ he said, flicking his hair. ‘Unexpected, right?’ He blushed over his blush. ‘I wasn’t sure whether to go for it, but…’ His voice was deep when he said that.

Clara felt like saying, ‘Aren’t you going to introduce me?’ but decided not to. That was probably another saying that was old hat.

‘It’s in Soho and there are loads of cafes nearby… it’s really lively.’

The girl sighed in admiration. ‘Oh, I’m jealous.’

Well, thought Clara. well, well.

Peter and the young woman were still staring at each other when the train rolled in.

‘Your train…?’ Clara reminded the girl eventually when she showed no sign of moving.

‘Oh, thank you! See you later, Peter…’

‘Definitely.’ They watched the girl get on; Peter was beaming. She pulled down the grimy window and waved until she was out of sight.

‘Good day, huh?’ Clara said.

‘Uh-huh.’

Peter would be okay.
