Miranda

One, I shouldn’t have drank so much wine.

Two, I shouldn’t have drank so much fucking wine.

Three, the annoyingly pretty red flag showed up with the guys.

Ollie blew into the apartment, beelined for Courtney, and grasped her face. She murmured softly as he checked her over relentlessly in a storm of anxiety. Eventually, satisfied with her condition, the cloud of tension billowing off him dispersed. Despite leaning casually against the counter, tart unease clung to my brother; I would’ve gone to him if he wasn’t right beside the vacant hole of emotion.

Leslie exuded effortless cool in his beat-up sneakers, those cursed black jeans, and a dark gray t-shirt. Courtney mentioned he was an art student— he certainly looked the part with ink splotches on his shoes and charcoal smudges on his forearms as if he’d just left the studio. What kind of art did he make? Did he have girls pose nude for him? Did he fuck them after?

Not that I should care.

Neon blue eyes shifted to me. I averted my stare to Jack, keeping Leslie in my peripherals.

“So if you two have increased power, does that mean the rest of us will?” Serina asked, twisting a lock of her hair. Anxiety tangled with her fizzy excitement. Ollie and Courtney exchanged a loaded look, uncertainty bouncing between them.

“Potentially,” Courtney finally said. Ollie tucked a lock of her hair behind her ear and bent to kiss the top of her head. A pang of jealousy zapped my heart at the bloom of affection— not envious of his attention on her, but of the connection they shared. Love and arousal twinned like crackling embers laced with rose musk.

“I’m going to bed,” I announced, excusing myself from the apartment.

Twist ring three times to the left. Three times to the right. Again to the left.

I was too drunk to feel their unconditional love. Too exhausted to consider the implications of our new existence. Too much. All of it was too fucking much.

I fled across the hall, my shaky hands slipping uselessly on the doorknob to my apartment.

“You ok?”

I stiffened.

I never fucking sensed him coming. I swore he snuck up on my most vulnerable moments to drive his claws in deep and rip me to shreds.

“I’m fine.”

Leslie leaned his shoulder into the door, effectively trapping me. This close, I was reminded how his strong arms felt cradling me. How his delicious scent stole my breath. How the vibration of his voice soothed the restlessness in my bones.

And the emptiness, Miranda. Don’t forget the emptiness.

I chewed the inside of my cheek and tapped the doorknob three times.

“You don’t seem fine.”

“You don’t know me,” I snapped.

He didn't flinch at my tone. One dark brow rose. “It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see you're upset.”

Somehow he’d peeled the film off my two-way mirror. My fingers drummed the cold metal knob. One, two, three. One, two, three. Shakily I inhaled and pinched my ring. Twist three times to the left.

“What’s it matter to you?”

The rough pad of a finger tipped up my chin.
