Chapter 16

Cora Mae Bingham walked into the Juniper Junction restaurant and looked around the room while she waited for the hostess. Conrad was parking the car and it had been months since they had gone out for a quiet dinner. Her work had been busy with holidays and events throughout the summer, and now he had a death case to solve. She was anxious to hear all about it.

The hostess walked up just as Conrad walked through the front door and she led them to a quiet booth against the far wall.

“Did you have difficulty finding a parking place?” Cora opened her menu and lowered it to the table.

“No, I’m just a little down the street near Peggy’s shop. There’s a street lamp out across the street down there where I parked though, so you probably need to let Rodney know.”

Cora pulled her phone from her purse to tap in a reminder for Monday. “I think I spied Saucy sitting in the back of the room when we walked through. I can’t tell who he’s with, but he never misses a chance to come here. We should probably do this more often. The atmosphere is relaxing.”

“Be better if they had steak.” Conrad put his reading glasses on and studied the menu. His stomach couldn’t tolerate too much spice and he didn’t want to be up all night.

“Variety is good!” Cora closed her menu and put it on the edge of the table. “Speaking of variety, what’s going on with the Sassafras death?”

“Alice called me right before I left the office. She hasn’t had time to do much, but her initial impression is that it was a reaction to a toxin. She’s running all the tests now, but they take time.”

“Something from the store, maybe?” Cora squinted her eyes. “They are opening a lot of boxes coming from various distributors and other stores. It could be anything.”

Conrad nodded. “Her parents said she didn’t have any health problems and no one else is sick, but it’s possible she had a sensitivity to some chemical and just didn’t know it. Alice said she’d test for everything.”

Their conversation paused while the server took their order. Conrad stayed safe with the butter chicken, and Cora Mae decided to be adventurous with a new dish. When the server walked away, Cora saw that Saucy had almost made his way to the front door.

“Is Saucy with Mr. Abbott?” Cora pointed at the exit. “He said he might call him for an appraisal.”

“I thought that guy was long gone.” Conrad leaned out of the booth and saw them walk down the sidewalk by the front windows. “Yep, that’s Abbott.”

“I’ll have to ask Saucy about that when I see him next.” The server brought their drinks and Cora thanked him. “Okay, now tell me what you think about the Sassafras ladies. I just met them today and it was just a brief introduction.”

“Have you been in the store?”

“Yes, I stopped in late in the day to share my condolences. I met Regina briefly several weeks ago, but I didn’t know her employees.
