Chapter 14

Their voices floated through the door, but Namara made no attempt to pick out the words. She instead focused on the rough doorframe under the palm of her hand, the night that slumbered dark and quiet around her. Aria would have expected her hours ago and was probably sick with worry. Though her hands still trembled and the coldness still sat deep, she felt empty. Numb. Thoughts came sluggishly and dropped away before she'd had time to make sense of them.

Laydon had stalked her all the way home before he, after making a vague threat of keeping quiet about the force circle, stalked away as she passed through the archway to the courtyard. After the way he'd coaxed her through whatever madness had overtaken her, she didn't find him as intimidating as before. She could still feel his hands on her cheeks, pressing tight as he urged her to breathe. Just one breath.

Her world had been upended in ways she didn't quite understand, and she didn't know how she was supposed to pretend otherwise. Gerty might not notice anything amiss, but Aria and Monroe certainly would.

Just one breath. She had good quality roha seeds, and that was all that mattered at the moment, wasn't it? At the end of a deep inhale, she reached for the door handle just as a voice stopped her.

“Found you,” the voice slithered out of the shadows behind her. It was a voice full of dark delight, as if having just won a game of hide and seek. She recognized it immediately, and deep down she knew to be afraid. She would have been afraid, but at that very moment, she didn't even have the presence of mind to startle at his sudden appearance.

Namara turned to face Fenrir. He stood only a few feet behind her, dressed in all black and a smile on his face.

“You know,” he said, “I thought you'd be easy to find. Silly me didn't order one of my men to tail you home. A sketcher of your caliber wouldn't be difficult to unearth, I thought. Oh, what fun to be proven wrong. But now, here I am.”

Namara gazed at him tiredly.

Fenrir's grin lost some of its luster. He tilted his head, and for some reason, he reminded her of a curious crow. “Rough day?”

“Yes.” Her tongue felt too thick for her mouth, too dry.

“What's wrong? You look...” He was suddenly right in front of her, fingers gripping her chin.

She pulled her face away.

His hands dropped, but his scrutiny of her did not. He leaned down and tried to catch her eye, but she couldn't stop staring sightlessly at the wall. There was something wrong with her, she knew, but she simply did not find it in her to care.

“Drunk?” she heard him muse to himself. “Well, this is a little inconvenient, but I'll talk and you'll be a good fellow and listen, hm? Maybe you'll remember this tomorrow, maybe not. I'll be back either way. The Lady in Red finally remembered you.
