Chapter 23: Alice

Alice was doing a job for the WWC on Wednesday morning and she was feeling quite pleased about it. Since joining the Specials she had been feeling increasingly guilty about moonlighting for her Aunt’s company, but that had changed. If the police were going to treat her like she was the guilty party then she didn’t feel that she owed them the slightest bit of loyalty. Her time belonged to the Co-operative, for the moment at least.

And there were worse employers. At least the WWC made sure that there was always tea and biscuits available, and gin and crisps after six p.m. Even if it did mean she had to pretend to like the dreadful slimming food that Bernie favoured.

Alice was learning that a large part of Bernie’s skill at being a private investigator seemed to lie in the fact that she knew absolutely everyone in Invergryff. And if she didn’t know them then some member of their wildly extended family would.

On Wednesday, Bernie had called to say that her older sister Martha knew someone who knew someone who had heard that some of the crew that had worked on the Cook-Off had been from the media studies department at Invergryff College.

As the youngest-by-far member of the WWC, Alice had found herself volunteered to pretend to be a college student for the day and go and see what she could find out. At least she didn’t need a disguise this time, Alice thought as she put on her normal clothes. She had only recently graduated from her photography HNC, so it wasn’t hard to blend in.

It didn’t take much of an effort to get to know the media students. Alice had already checked the timetable on the website, so she knew where the classroom was and when the break time was. After that she just had to ensure that she was in the right place when the students spilled out into the corridor.

“Hi,” Alice said, walking over to a group of half a dozen students. “Are you all doing the media course? I was wondering if you could tell me a bit about it. I’m applying for next year.”

Very quickly she was cornered by two young lads who used the opportunity to explain every aspect of the course in tedious detail, while trying inexpertly to flirt with her.

“What about practical stuff,” Alice said when she managed to get a word in. “I heard they arrange work experience for you, those sorts of things.”

“Sometimes,” young lad number one with the freckles said. “Depends on the lecturer.”

“I was hoping to get into telly, you see. Maybe have a shot at doing some camera work.”

The other lad snorted. “They don’t let us do anything that fun. But there’s a decent studio set up here. I could show you around if you like?”

Alice decided to side-step that one. “Weren’t a lot of you asked to be part of that Cook-Off thing the other day? One of the lecturers mentioned it to me.”

“Only a couple of people were picked,” Freckles said, clearly he hadn’t been one of them.
