Walking back to the studio, my thoughts wandered to other family tragedies I’ve seen. Granny Gunkel’s daughter-in-law’s greed tore her family apart and landed her in jail. Judy Hobbs went to extreme measures to protect her son and then had to prove his innocence.

And then there was my family. When I learned I had a half-sister whose identity had been kept from me all these years, I was angry for Aunt Ruth for being part of that deception. But stepping back from my hurt proved the best thing. Accepting that people must make hard decisions and live with them was a good lesson for me. Looking back, might they have decided differently? Who am I to judge? What would I have done in my father’s shoes? He loved my mother and forgave her infidelity. In those days, her choice to leave Harmony to give birth and then give Carolyn up for adoption made the most sense in the situation she was placed. The fact that Carolyn’s father desperately wanted to keep and raise her was dismissed. The discovery of my parents’ secret and then finding my half-sister under her stage name of Beverly, along with her daughter Alli, changed my life and grew my family. I included them in my wedding plans by taking my bride dress search to Los Angeles, where they lived. The trip was fruitless as to finding a dress, but priceless as to spending time with them. I also confirmed one of my reasons for moving back to Harmony. That I no longer want to live in a big city. Never ever again. Visit…yes. Inhabit…no.

Beverly and Alli are going to be staying at the Whitlow Bed and Breakfast house for our December wedding. This thought warmed my heart. I cannot wait for them all to see how beautiful the village is during the Christmas season. Our Winter Wonderland planning group is growing bigger every year.

Scott waited for me at the studio. I gave him a quick kiss. “What a pleasant surprise!”

Mandy looked like the cartoon cat who swallowed the canary.

“What’s going on?” I asked.

“Matt sent something over with Scott for us to see. Right this way.” She led us back to her framing room and there on the big wooden worktable were architectural drawings.

With a proud tone to his voice, Scott said, “Matt’s been learning to operate AutoCad in order to do building plans for Drake Construction. I’ve taken the liberty of explaining some things we talked about doing to this space and he went with them to come up with preliminary drawings.”

“And I snuck him in to take measurements when you went to LA,” Mandy said with a wink.

When I inspected the oversized prints, I realized they were drawings of the future Parker Photography! My eyes tried to take in all the details Matt had put into these plans.

Scott came up behind me and gave me a hug. “You’re awfully quiet Jackie. We can change these. Matt can easily rearrange things more to your liking.
