Fifteen minutes later, medics were tending to the injured cops outside the ruins of the Leiti’s shack, shielding them from the rain to the best of their ability. Tahiti was nearby trying to examine the bullet hole in Kraken’s midsection.

“Leave me alone, I’m fine,” Kraken protested through gritted teeth. But blood was leaking from a hole in his midsection and from his silvery scaled leg.

Tahiti looked up at me with alarm. “We’ve got to get him to the ocean.”

Kraken nudged her away from him with a gentle shove. “I’ll get the Leiti.” He breezed past the cops and entered the fallen shack, streams of scarlet trailing after him in the muddy ground.

Before anyone could stop him, Kraken had reemerged from the rubble with the plump body of Leiti La’aka slung over his shoulder like a wet sack of flour. No one was in the mood to get in his way. I heard sirens in the distance, the kind used by the MAs.

“We’re leaving,” I told Sims, who glanced at me and nodded once before turning his attention back to the wounded cops.

Modoc, a bandage wrapped around his head, called after me. “This isn’t over, asshole. I’ll be seeing you soon.”

“I won’t be hard to find,” I told him.
