Chapter Twelve

We called Burton right away and, to his credit, he was there almost immediately. The state police, already around because of the investigation into Sally’s death, were at the house just a few minutes later. Grayson and I told them where to look and soon grim-looking officers were stringing up crime scene tape.

Grayson had his arm around me as we stood on the sidewalk in front of Donna’s house. He said gruffly, “Your gut knew what it was talking about.”

I nodded. “I wish it hadn’t. I mean, Donna hadn’t made a great impression on me, but I didn’t want anything to happen to her.” I looked up at Grayson. “I guess this means Roger is going to be the main suspect. After all, he was having quite an argument with her yesterday. I wonder if Burton got the chance to talk to both of them after I filled him in.”

“Looks like you’ll have the opportunity to ask him yourself.”

Sure enough, Burton was heading our way with a somber look on his face.

“Rough way to start out the morning,” he said to us sympathetically. “Although I do have to wonder what the two of you were doing in Donna Price’s backyard.”

Grayson had the grace to look flushed. “Sorry, Burton. That was my idea. After Ann told me about the scene between Donna and Roger, I thought it might be good to talk with her as a reporter. I had the excuse of her home business and pulled Ann into this.”

Burton nodded. “That makes sense. You’re trying to do your job, after all. If Roger Young is involved in any of this, it’s going to be a huge story.”

I said, “Did you have the chance to follow-up with Donna yesterday?”

Burton looked pained and shook his head. “No. The team was diverted by some physical evidence we were trying to make heads or tails of. Somebody was sent out, but there was no answer at the door.” He sighed. “She might have been trying to avoid us. If she hadn’t done that, maybe she’d still be alive.”

Grayson said, “I suppose this means Roger Young is the prime suspect?”

“If he doesn’t have an excellent alibi. Of course, the overheard conversation is hearsay now because Donna Price is dead. The guy is probably around people most of the time, though, so he might just have an alibi. He’s got advisers and campaign staff and a whole entourage.”

I said, “Was Donna married?”

Burton said, “The officer who’d tried and failed to speak with her yesterday did some background work on her. She was married but divorced. No children. She receives some alimony from her ex as well as income from her home business.”

I felt a wave of sadness hit me. She’d been trying to make her own way, despite some bumps along the road.

Burton noticed my expression and quickly said, “Donna likely didn’t know what hit her, literally. She was faced away from the murderer and had her earbuds in, playing music.” He glanced at Grayson. “That’s off-the-record, of course.
