Chapter Twenty-Two

Agnes smiled at the young man as she stepped into the lift. He was quite tall and looked quite smart in his uniform, with the small cap perched on top of his long, dark hair. The cap was the one thing about the uniform that Larry hated and he only wore it if someone from head office was visiting the hotel.

“What floor, madam?”

“Sixth floor, please,” she lied. Her room was actually on the fourth floor. But she could easily walk down two flights of stairs. “So, how are things with you? I gather you're fairly new here. Do you enjoy your job?”

“Yes.” He paused. “But it can be a bit boring at times. I think I would like it more if there was a little excitement from time to time.”

“I'm sure all jobs can be a little boring.” Agnes replied. “Maybe you could find a way to make your job more exciting. Thinking back to my working days, I was told that a job is what you make of it.”

It was true. Her parents had told her that she would need to start at the bottom and work her way up. That way, she would know first-hand how to run a business.

Andy gave her a puzzled look. “What excitement could I possibly drum up through pressing a button to go up and then another to come back down?”

Agnes tapped her chin for a moment. “Well, considering your job, you could imagine you were on a space shuttle, about to take off for the moon.”

“People have already been to the moon,” he replied, sullenly.

“Okay, then what about Mars?” Agnes suggested. “No one has been there yet. Therefore, every time you push the button to go up, imagine you are the first man to land on Mars. In other words, the eagle has landed. Then, when you come back down, envisage you are returning to earth. On the ground floor, think that Ground Control is pleased to see you back.”

Andy grinned. “You are one crazy lady, madam. Oops, I'm sorry,” he added, realising he had gone over the line. “I shouldn't have said that. Mr Jenkins will sack me if he hears I said that to a guest. He's already got it in for me.”

“No need to worry, Andy. I'm not going to tell him,” she said, with a huge smile. “I know I can be one hell of a crazy lady at times, even the manager knows that.” She shrugged. “But I don't care – it keeps me young. After all, like a job, life is what you make it.” Agnes paused. “In your case, today you are a lift attendant here at the hotel, but tomorrow you might be a pilot on an aeroplane and the day after that – you could be captain of a team of men and women, heading for Mars. It all depends on what you want from life.”

The lift attendant was stunned into silence. It was only when they had reached the sixth floor and the doors were already open, did he realise that the lift had even stopped.
