Chapter 19

Isabel and I finished loading up what supplies the Exiles gave us—some handguns, a few clips of ammo, plenty of food and water, and a small plastic covering for the map. They gave us some hooded camo coats that fit nicely on us both.

“Best of luck, you two. We’ve always got your back,” the soldiers said to us as we began to leave.

“Thank you for everything you’ve done for us,” Isabel said with a courteous bow. “We wouldn’t be here if it were not for you.” The soldiers gave us a quick salute. We turned and started into the darkening forest.

I felt much more confident now from our training with the Stones of Power. We both increased our knowledge and tolerance of the Stones from it. In addition, we were also armed with guns, and had the full support of the exiled tribe. This was the strongest we’d ever been on this island. Was it enough to finally destroy the Scribes, though? A shout interrupted my thoughts.

“Hold up!” a familiar voice called over to us. I turned around and I instantly felt anger rise inside of me. Luke emerged from a tent dressed in full gear just like us. “Leo gave me leave to travel with you two. Said something about sending you off on this mission without extra help would be foolish,” Luke said with a nod and a grin.

“We’ve held our own against a lot worse before. Just us two. We managed then; we’ll manage now. Thanks for the offer, though,” I said to him quickly.

“Extra help would be welcome!” Isabel said happily from behind me.

I clenched my fists in frustration.

“Great! That okay with you, Samuel?” Luke asked. I could see in his eyes how he felt about me.

“Sure. It’s fine,” I said without any emotion.

“Perfect. Let’s get moving then,” he said as he started to lead us. I turned off his path through the forest. The sun had already gone down and light was fading quickly.

Luke noticed that I was straying off from his path. “Going the wrong way, Sam,” he said to me.

“I have the map, and we are going to go this way,” I said.

“I’ve been through these woods and to that river inlet dozens of times. This way is faster.”

“Fine then, lead the way.” I made no effort to hide my disgust. As we continued down Luke’s path, he continued to critique me.

“You stomp any louder, Sam, Markus will hear us coming all the way from his bunker,” Luke called back to me. I ignored his comment and continued after him. “Is your gun even loaded?” He asked as he looked over his shoulder.

Something inside of me began to burn, and I felt a surge of energy from my Stone. I lost control and grabbed him by the back of his jacket. Even though he was much bigger than me, I caught him by surprise and threw him into a nearby tree trunk. He grunted as he slammed into the tree. He turned around, and I pulled out my pistol and put the gun’s barrel to his head.
