Chapter Fourteen

“Okay. Color me confused.”

Carmen stared down the darkened tunnel into the throat of the mine. Her headlamp illuminated a limited field of vision, but she was pretty sure there wasn’t much here anyway. Chunks of splintered wood from overhead support beams littered the floor in scattered clumps for as far as she could see. Scattered snow had blown in and iced over in places. Carmen clearly saw the uneven dirt floor along with the remains of a track. A large, square metal box sat near the limit of her light. She squinted and thought it was the remains of a mining cart. Behind that, the mine curved away out of sight into the mountain. Debris had rained down over the years, forming mounds that obscured much of the tunnel.

Somehow, she had expected to walk into the mine and discover positive proof of nefarious activity. This was anticlimactic. Her nose felt frozen and her cheeks stung from exposure. Carmen sniffled and pulled a tissue from the inside of her left glove. After all this time freezing their buns off, there wasn’t anything to find.

Carmen blew her nose, trying not to make a production of it in front of Faye. “This was a huge waste of time.”

She stood there watching as Faye wandered farther into the darkness. Carmen was perfectly content to wait where she stood. She still had no idea why Wrighton was dead, but believed they wouldn’t find the answers here. With frustration riding high, she was ready to come right out and confront Kofi and Pymer. At least she would have the element of surprise.

Faye walked right past the mine cart and followed the tunnel around to the left. A separate corridor led off to the right. Carmen didn’t know how far either tunnel went, but she didn’t believe separating inside a mine shaft was a good idea. When Faye crossed out of sight, Carmen finally chased after her.

“We should stay together. I don’t know much about mines, but I’ve heard they can be dangerous.”

Her voice echoed through the space, hinting at a long open shaft ahead. When Faye didn’t respond, Carmen hurried forward until she rounded the corner. She spotted Faye standing about ten feet away. Her posture seemed off somehow. Carmen realized that Faye stood ramrod still, staring at the ground. The light was even worse in this curved section and she couldn’t see what Faye looked at. A horrible thought occurred to her and Carmen raced over to join her.

Carmen put a hand on Faye’s shoulder and peered through the shadows to find out what had her so fixated. She expected another body. Instead a spider shaped machine lay against the rock wall. One of the arms had snapped off and lay discarded a few inches away from the main body. Carmen stooped down and reached out to roll the object over. A large camera was attached to the machine’s underside.

“Is this what I think it is?”

Faye knelt beside her, close enough for Carmen to feel her body heat.
