With Bastian out of town, I returned to Ironwood and relished in its familiarity. The sounds, the site, the smells... All of them were a part of me and it helped shaped who I was today. This place had a way of healing me, much the same way Emma did. I leaned against the rocks outlining the Halo, the space where Roman used to train me, and slurped through four blood bags in less than a minute before heading to command where I heard Victor and Oz speaking.

"Tell me about the bank," Victor said when I joined them. "Oz claimed you had all the fun."

"I wouldn't call it fun," I said, and rotated my injured shoulder. It had mostly healed from being stabbed. "But I was successful in compelling all of his guards. When the time is right, we will return and free the witches."

Victor slapped his hands together and shook his head. "That's quite a gift you have. Few can compel vampires, and even fewer can erase another vampire's compulsion, especially one as old as Bastian."

"Don't give him a bigger head than he already has," Oz mumbled.

I dropped into a chair across from Victor. "I've been thinking about my abilities. You have Elizabeth's blood in you too, so shouldn't you be able to do the same?"

"Already tried and failed. My DNA is different than yours and reacts differently with hers. You may have gotten her gift of compulsion but you also got her bloodlust. I, on the other hand, seem to have gained an ability of speed I never had before. Have you noticed?"

I rubbed the back of my neck thinking back to all the times I had fought him. "I can't say that I have. I'm still able to beat you." I cracked a smile.

"That's only because I let you win. That's what all good parents do."

I laughed and held up my hands. "Whoa, whoa. Too far! A good parent?"

"The best." He chuckled and turned back to the cameras, his smile disappearing. "I've heard you're doling out punishments just like I used to do."

My mood darkened. "Bastian has me doing all sorts of dirty work. Believe me, I hate being what you once were."

"You know why he chose you to do it, right? He could've chosen someone else, but you are the perfect person to accomplish his goal."

"What goal?"

"I'm sure you've heard Bastian go off about his ideas of a utopian society."

"Once or twice," I admitted.

"He really believes humans and vampires can coexist together in perfect harmony. You bring a good balance between the two species because they knew you first as their champion."

I leaned back into the chair, guilt knotting my throat. I should still be their champion.

Victor cleared his throat, as if it might chase away the heavy feeling in the room. He must know how I was feeling.

Sensing the awkwardness, Oz said, "Bastian didn't reduce the number of guards at the prison like you thought he would. We staked it out earlier today."

"He still doesn't trust my council," I said.
