DOES ANYONE BELIEVE the story of the prodigal son as written? The elder son, who complained he worked and worked beside his father and had never been given so much as a kid to eat, was right: the prodigal’s absence had nothing to do with that perverse outflow of affection. Who knows why the older wasn’t the fatted-calf child? Clearly the younger—the one of the “riotous living”—had charm, had life, maybe from an early age pulled funny clothes over his head and ran across the house, making everyone laugh. Maybe the older got plain and serious.

How did God watch the hominids, like sons, work out their inheritance? Neanderthals had more body hair, thicker bodies; they should have survived the ice ages, not us. Maybe God felt the wrong child lived. Or maybe we’re the undeserving favored ones, sitting down to eat the banquet we scarcely appreciate, always amoral and amusing.

Who always get one hundred fancy things for each thing we ask for, ninety-nine things too much.

I say this as an environmental abnormality, a craps roll of Darwin’s dice, a destructive, carnivorous primate, myself.
