Startled by the entire event, Sonia stayed close to Nikki as they walked away from the scene. She tried to put together in her mind the how and the why of Scottâs death, but nothing added up.
âDo you think someone did this because of what happened to Marlo?â Sonia looked over at Nikki.
âI have no idea.â Nikki frowned. âBut you heard what that officer said. He didnât think I should be around the crime scene. Me being at the scene of two homicides in as many days doesnât look very good, does it?â
âDonât worry about that.â Sonia patted her shoulder. âYouâve done nothing wrong.â
âMaybe not, but Scott just threatened me not even an hour ago. How do you think thatâs going to look?â Nikki sighed as she looked down at the dogs that remained close to her side as she walked.
âNo one has to know about that.â Sonia narrowed her eyes.
âWhat if someone saw us, though?â Nikki shook her head. âOh, this is just awful. How can this be happening? First Marlo, and now Scott?â
âIt is terrible.â Sonia squeezed her shoulder then looked towards the apartment complex. âIâm sorry that I couldnât get any information from the maintenance man.â
âThatâs all right.â Nikki shook her head. âI donât know where to look next, now that Scott is no longer a possibility.â
âWell, thatâs not exactly true.â Sonia paused at the entrance of the apartment complex and then continued walking. âJust because he was killed, that doesnât mean that he isnât the one who killed Marlo. In fact, maybe he was killed because of that.â
âThen someone must know that he was the murderer.â Nikki frowned. âIf they know that, then why wouldnât they have turned him in?â
âThatâs a very good question. Maybe they didnât have proof? Maybe they were worried that it would incriminate themselves?â Sonia scrunched up her nose. âSomething smells fishy about this entire situation. I think thereâs a lot more going on here than meets the eye.â Sonia picked up Princess and followed behind Nikki as they walked in the direction of Soniaâs car. As she heard sirens wail in the distance, her stomach flipped. It was too late for Scott, but maybe they could find something that would lead them not only to Marloâs killer, but Scottâs as well.
âIt appears so. But what, is the question?â Nikki smiled as they approached her friend, Ginaâs café.
âHow about some tea?â Sonia offered. âSomething to relax your nerves.â
âGood idea.â They all crossed the road to the café.
Nikki often took the dogs she walked to the café. Gina always made sure there were water bowls for her customersâ dogs set up outside.
âIs this okay?â Sonia chose one of the two empty tables available. It was a table for four away from the other tables that had customers at them. They sat down in the chairs as the dogs happily took turns drinking from the water bowl. Princess went first and the other two waited patiently. Nikki and Sonia smiled at the sight. Once
