The Murder Basement

You only get to see me once a day, or you’ll turn into a pumpkin. No lunch today. Don’t overdose on sodium ~ Ryan.

A smile played over my lips as I read through Ryan’s text.

Something told me he would’ve come if I’d asked him to.

Last night helped settle some nerves about how Ryan made me feel, too. I wasn’t worried about baby steps anymore. I had a good head on my shoulders. I wasn’t going to pick some rando who would hurt me. I would trust my instincts and know that I'd be okay if it didn’t work out with Ryan.

I texted back:

I make no promises. I may be a salt zombie at dinner tonight.

And get ready for the rest of my day.

We’ll be going through more inventory today, and then I will talk to our PR people about setting up a Halloween scavenger hunt for the Halloween Festival. Finally, I was going to start researching Azazel’s painting.

Senna told me that she and her Coven sisters would start to look into ways to break the curse. And now that the External Nexus was approaching and things weren’t beginning to happen, we were all going to look for more connections there.

Any information I could provide them with on the three layers of the painting, the witches who created the curse, and how it might be linked with the External Nexus (if at all) would be helpful.

The more I thought about it, the more it made sense that the black humanoid figure was sapping up the souls, especially if the veil was fading between the realms. However, I’m not sure why. Its motivation may be due to a secondary issue.

The primary issue was that I had no idea how to contain it.

So, I was going to contact Matilda once it was after dinner time for her. I’d already left her a voicemail, and she responded with a text letting me know that 7 p.m. her time would be perfect, which meant that I had two more hours before talking to her.

Plenty of time to do research.

“Carson? You needed me?” Liam appeared in my doorway.

“Hi, Liam, yes. I’m still looking into the missing souls at the museum and the Azazel Black painting. For the Azazel Black, can you tell me where the history of it is? I’d like to take the painting down again to examine it, but Azazel is very sensitive about it.”

Twirling his mustache, his eyes rolled upward in thought. “Hmm, I think I know where we can find something. It’s in the basement, though, just warning you. It’s not pretty down there.”

I chuckled. “It’s okay. I have kids. Very few things scare me anymore unless it’s related to them.”

“I knew I liked you,” Liam said, motioning for me to join him. “I suppose it is a good thing you see it, though. It’ll give you an understanding of how disorganized we are.”

I perked up as we walked down the long hallway. Our offices had more of an administrative feel.
