Chapter Seventeen: Jane

I almost felt sorry for the witch on stage, Lemmi. At least my grandmother was up there pretending to be supportive. Under the circumstances, that was the best she could do. Whether that poor witch up there knew it I couldn’t have said.

I also couldn’t believe that Lemmi was staying across the street from the inn. Given my grandmother’s late night activities, I had to assume that wasn’t an accident. I also had every intention of making my grandmother tell me what was going to happen. I was sure Lemmi had no idea what was coming her way.

“She’s leaving pretty quickly,” Pep observed, watching Lemmi basically run off the stage.

“I would be too,” said Jason.

Lark frowned. “I think the whole thing is ridiculous. The longer we’re here, the more I wonder what’s going on. I wish Cookie would explain it to us,” she said.

“I was thinking the exact same thing,” I told her.

She nodded sagely. “I think we’re just going to have to have a little chat with our dear grandmother. I’m sure she’ll love it.”

Pep shook her head. “I think we should just leave her alone. She’ll tell us when she wants to.”

“She’s never going to want to,” I said. “That would be all well and good if we weren’t involved in this too, whatever’s happening on this island.”

“Maybe nothing’s happening. Maybe this is as exciting as it’s going to get,” Lark said doubtfully.

“There’s already been a murder,” I pointed out. “It can’t be as exciting as it’s going to get.”

My cousin nodded, conceding the point.

I was tired of standing in the sun and tired of finger foods. All I really wanted to do was find some of the shop owners and question them about Adam. After all, what Charles had said was interesting, especially the part about Adam keeping to himself for so long. Was he hiding something? I figured there was only one way to find out, and that was to start asking more questions.

Plus, Grant had already left to pursue his investigation. I wanted to be where he was, hot on the trail of a killer.

“Let’s get out of this sunshine. Everybody is all too chirpy for me,” Pep said.

Lark made a face as if she didn’t even know what that meant.

There was no sign of my grandmother as we left the grounds, but that wasn’t a surprise. Given how big and important she was at this event, I assumed she had meetings to attend.

Not, mind you, that she had told us anything about her responsibilities or her schedule. No, we were just expected to wait for her to show up whenever she saw fit. Her conduct certainly didn’t make it easy for us to keep track of her or to make sure she was all right. But that was nothing new; she never worried about things like that, so I told myself I wouldn’t either, even though a murderer was on the loose.

I was relieved to see that no one else seemed to be leaving the party except the two witches who were dueling.
