Chapter Thirteen

Ryan showed up at Sahana’s room exactly twenty minutes later, cradling a stack of firewood. His eyes scanned her from head to toe when she answered his gentle knock on the door.

“You changed your dress,” he noted with a smile. “Not for me, I hope?” he added, his eyes glinting.

She hated how well he knew her. But she was determined not to give him the satisfaction of it. She shook her head. “I want to look good for Aunt Sigi when I meet her,” Sahana said.

Ryan laughed and walked over to the stack the wood in the firebox. When he was done he stood up again. “Shall we?”

She nodded. “I’m ready to be wowed.”

Ryan led Sahana down the inn’s stairway. He paused at the landing and pointed to the reception desk. “That’s the reception, and that’s my uncle, Clive,” he said, playfully.

Sahana pretended to yawn. “What else you got?”

Laughing, Ryan led them through to the common living room, which was occupied by a few guests. “This is the common room, and through there’s our restaurant, and—” Ryan paused to wave at a woman who was standing at a table talking to a young couple. When she was done, she walked over to them.

“Hello, there,” she said warmly. She was of medium height with shapely curves, gray eyes, and short, silver curls that grazed her shoulders.

“Sahana this is my aunt, Sigi,” Ryan said. “Aunt Sigi, this is Sahana.”

“Very nice to meet you, young lady.” Sigi smiled, extending her hand out.

“The pleasure’s all mine,” Sahana replied.

At that moment, an inn staff walked up with some papers clipped to a notepad. “Inventory,” he said, holding the clipboard and a pen up for Ryan to sign the papers.

Sahana watched as Ryan first studied it briefly before signing it and added, “Oh, and Sam, the Tucker family checked in a little while ago. Could we send some board games up for their kids and offer them some complimentary hot chocolate, please? They’re in The Chained Maiden.”

“Will do, Ryan,” the staffer said, and walked away.

“Complimentary hot chocolate?” Sahana’s eyes widened, coaxing a smile out of him.

“The Tuckers are one of our regulars,” Ryan explained.

Sahana nodded. “Something tells me they’ll remain your regulars.”

“Ryan’s great at managing the inn,” Sigi said, squeezing her nephew’s arm. “He learned it from watching his parents, but he has it in him to be that person, you know? And the staff really look up to him.”

Sahana glanced at him.

“Team effort,” he said, automatically.

She laughed, shook her head and turned to Sigi. “Ryan’s going to give me a tour of the place.”

“That’s a great idea,” Sigi said. “I hope you’ll stop by the restaurant for some dinner, later? Ryan chooses the menus with me every day and he’s ensured that everything we prepare here is locally sourced to support our farmers in Gig Harbor.”

“I’d love that, thank you,” Sahana said. She’d only been at the inn a few hours and already she was beginning to get a sense of how deeply Ryan was invested in the place.
