When Veronica dropped Daniel off at the police station, there was a message waiting, see Spt Hart.
âMaâam?â he asked at her office door.
âCSIs found a body in number five Gelli Terrace. Where you said it would be.â
So why didnât Mal ring me?
âThe Chief Constable has asked DCI Kent to be part of the press conference tonight, appeals for information and, we thought appeals for sightings of Mabon and the two boys.â
âIs that wise? People will assume we think heâs guilty.â
âWe know heâs guilty of kidnapping his son and beating up his sonâs mother. We know heâs guilty of taking off with two kids, so to be honest, I donât care if people assume that we want to talk to him because heâs guilty.â Hart took a deep breath. Daniel remembered how she had been at the first briefing, how they had all been. How they all still were whenever they thought about the two little girls.
âBut, maâam, weâve got nothing associating him with the deaths of the Edwards family. John Edwards is still the most likely candidate.â
âSorry, Daniel,â she said, âIâve had John Edwards senior on the phone, and the Chief Constable, and the press office, and itâs clear that until those boys are back at home, no one in Gelli will tell the truth. We need to find Mabon, or whatever heâs calling himself this week. We need this sorted out, and soon, or the PCC will start wondering whether to call someone else in.â
There was a ping from the computer on Hartâs desk. She looked at it briefly and a flush spread over her cheeks.
âRevise that last statement. The PCC is already wondering whether to call someone else in.â
