Yudel got out of bed and pulled on his dressing gown and slippers. The dial of his watch indicated that it was two o'clock. He had not yet been asleep, the events of the day and a growing apprehension keeping him awake. The apprehension was the result of his having told van Aswegen what his purpose in Middelspruit was. These people were all part of the same in-group. Whatever you did could be catered for or forgotten, but you had to be one of them. Your frauds could be covered up, your assaults never mentioned, your incest ignored, your corruption laughed away, but you had to be part of the community. If you were an outsider, you were automatically suspect. The thugs that threw the tear-gas bombs, broke up a visiting liberal's car and cracked the skulls of impertinent blacks, were doing no more than defending their group. They were protecting the old and familiar against the new and the outsider. And van Aswegen was one of them. Yudel could not imagine the conservative middle-aged police officer taking part in minor acts of terrorism against introspective non-violent men of the church or troubled civil rights crusaders, but that he was one of them, blood of their blood, was manifest. "They did very little damage...There's nothing wrong with our young men..."
From the window Yudel looked down into the street. It was altogether empty now. Apart from the weak glow of the streetlights the town was in almost total darkness, shut and bolted against the cold of the night and the constant threat of Phontomol. In every house there would be, at least, a revolver. In many there would be a hunting rifle or a shotgun as well. The residents of Phontomol would be well advised to stay on their side of the hill. They were all aware that South African law said that a man found breaking and entering could be shot dead with impunity. Yudel knew that the Middelspruiters' determination to go armed was no more than their determination to survive as a group. It was that inherent determination that was the secret of their species' survival. It was the secret of all survival.
What Yudel had come to do would soon be common knowledge among them. If he read van Aswegen's personality correctly, it would come to the attention of the members of this Boere Nasie even earlier, always assuming that such an organization existed.
He left the room and made his way downstairs to the lobby. The old night porter was asleep behind the reception counter. His neck was bent backwards, pointing his face at the ceiling, and he was snoring in loud intermittent bursts. Yudel leaned on the counter, resting on his elbows. "Good morning," he said. The porter slept on, the corners of his mouth turned down sharply, giving his face a disgruntled appearance. Yudel tried again. "Excuse me." He knocked sharply on the counter. "Excuse me." There was still no response. Yudel went round to the other side.
