Chapter 18
Whistle Stop Farm
Ross and his team, minus Church and Curtis, were gathered in the squad room at headquarters. They'd been joined by DCI Agostini for the viewing of the video surveillance disc they'd obtained from the office of Carlton Villiers, the estate agent where Grace Morgan had worked. The manager, Robert Carter had brought it in personally, rather than sending it with a staff member.
Paul Ferris walked across to the large plate glass window and quickly lowered the blinds, reducing the light level in the room. The hidden camera in the office of Carlton Villers was positioned in such a way that it picked up anyone entering through the door from the street and covered most of the office, having only two blind spots at the periphery of its range to the sides of the office.
At the appropriate moment, Grace Morgan was seen shaking hands with her previous clients and soon after, the man who they knew as 'The Doctor' made his entrance.
Obviously unaware of the camera's presence, he made no attempt to cover his face. Each of the detectives, armed with copies of photographs of Peter Adamson, studied the man's features carefully.
Oscar Agostini asked, “Is it him?”
“The build and the height is right, but the beard and moustache makes it difficult to be sure,” Ross said. “The picture's not brilliant, probably because he's at an angle to the camera.”
“I think it's Adamson,” Derek McLennan seemed certain.
“Me too,” Nick Dodds agreed.
“When was this photo taken?” Sam Gable was a little more cautious.
“Shortly before his release from Ashworth,” Ross replied.
“Can't Sergeant Ferris do something on the computer to remove the beard and moustache from the photo, sir?” Ishaan Singh asked.
“Already working on it,” said Ferris from his desk, as he busily typed instructions into his computer.
“I wish they had sound on this thing. It would be useful if we could hear what he's saying to her,” Ginger Devenish added.
Ferris turned round triumphantly. “Take a look, sir.”
Ross and Agostini both responded and almost ran to Ferris's position.
“That's the best I can do,” Ferris said, apologetically.
“It's brilliant, Paul,” said Agostini.
“Damn right it is,” Ross agreed. “There's no doubt about it. That's fucking Peter Adamson, for sure.”
“So, we have an ID, but we don't have an address for the bastard. He could be anywhere,” Agostini added.
“I'm hoping Sergeant Church and DC Curtis might return with something helpful, sir,” Ross proffered, hopefully.
“They still over Ashton way?”
“Yes. They've left the psychiatrist's office and are on the way to speak to Gregg Adamson again.”
“A lead?”
“Fenella just said they had to follow up on something Dr Deal told them.”
“OK, Andy, keep me posted. I don't need to tell you we need to find this man, fast!”
“I know. We'll get him, sir.”
After Agostini left the room, Ross pulled the team around him and issued his instructions, though in truth there wasn't a lot they could do until they heard from Church and Curtis.
“We have Adamson's background information, and the only thing we need is a location for him. Unfortunately, there's nothing in this information that can help us.
