Yuna was quick in her goodbyes. After driving back to the quarter, the water shifter traded numbers through all three of our phones, then excused herself.
Merric hung around. Naturally.
âI like her,â he said, and when I looked at him I found him back to his nine-tailed, half shifted form. âSheâs a cecaelia, but Iâm not sure you know what that is.â He tipped his head, tone full of patience. âDo you, George?â
Hesitantly, I shook my head.
âIt means sheâs a predator.â He snapped his teeth playfully. âMaybe she wants to eat you up, huh?â
âWhat do you want?â I asked, keeping my tone light. Nine tailed kitsune were rare; legends held that it took hundreds of years for a kitsune to obtain nine, if they did at all. Was he as strong as Akiva? As Cian?
Was he stronger?
âTo have fun,â Merric admitted. âIt was lucky I caught your little spell the other day, wasnât it? And that Marin didnât scare you off of me.â His eyes danced at my look of surprise. âThough she did try her best.â
âYou know her?â
His grin widened, but he didnât answer.
âIâll help you,â he said after a moment, two of his long tails wrapping around my waist and urging me to step closer. Here, in the dark and without anyone around us, I wondered if he would kill me. Would I be able to defend myself? The wendigo hadnât, and I couldnât hold a candle to Jameson. No one was here to see. No one was here to help. âBut Iâll ask something from you in return,â the kitsune went on.
âThen maybe Iâll find another kitsune,â I whispered through numb lips.
His smirk turned arrogant. âNo you wonât. And you need me for Lucia. Sheâs strong; she learned her illusions from a kitsune, after all.â His tails had caused my shirt to ride up and now the fur slid like silk against my skin.
âSo what do you want?â I asked again, trying to choose my words carefully.
âI donât know yet,â the fox admitted. âI like to collect debts; yours will be the centerpiece on my trophy shelf. The debt of a Levasseur summoner. Such a lucky coincidence, donât you think?â
Just as his tails tightened around my body, they pulled away, fur sliding against my skin. It felt intimate, but I kept that thought to myself. Magic tingled in the absence of his fur, as if heâd left some of his own power on my skin.
âSee you tomorrow,â he said, shoulders ducked almost shyly, though his eyes hadnât yet gone back to their normal muddy brown. âReally excited to come over to your house and go see that movie with you. Maybe weâll make it a thing.â
I couldnât help but think how that sounded vaguely like a threat.
