Chapter 14
Mia stopped walking as the import of what heâd said sank in.
âHeâs saying weâre right. Dad and Glenda were murdered.â She stared at Arlo in amazement. She wasnât crazy. Linda was right. The dream was right.
âYep.â
âIs he worried about the consequences of talking to you?â
âNot on his own behalf. Heâs single so thereâs no immediate family although his brother and sister live in the area and visit regularly and so does Myra. She was frightened when I dropped in on her, thatâs why she told Ed.â
âWho would know you did?â
Arlo spread his hands and shrugged. âI wouldnât be surprised if the council office has a mole. Iâm not frightened.â He started walking again. âI have to try Myra again.â
âWhat about Riley?â She kept pace beside him.
âWhat about him?â
âIf these people go around killing and making threats they might want to shut you up too by approaching him.â
âThatâs a bit unlikely, isnât it, now theyâve got their approvals? Letâs not get carried away.â
Mia firmed her lips and said nothing. Not being frightened on his own behalf was one thing but Riley? If something happened to the boy sheâd never forgive herself for indirectly involving him.
âWhat are you doing for the rest of the day?â he asked after a few moments.
âThereâs jazz from three at the hotel. I thought Iâd check that out.â
âLike some company?â
âSure.â
âOr,â he said and slipped his hand into hers, âwe could go back to my place and pick up where we left off yesterday.â
âOh ⦠um.â Her hesitation was enough.
âSorry, not a good idea.â
âNo, well, yes and no,â she said. âYes, itâs a good idea and no because the timing is terrible.â
âItâs the only chance we might have.â
âThatâs the point. I donât do quickies with men I hardly know and who I probably wonât see again, no matter how attractive I may find them.â
âSo you think Iâm attractive.â He grinned and nudged closer.
âYou know I do. Donât look so smug.â She gave him a gentle jab with her elbow and he laughed.
âIf you do come back to mine you might change your mind and stay in town,â he said.
âI wonât but Iâm not leaving just yet. Anywayââ She raised an eyebrow his way, ââwhy should I be the one to give up my career and move? Why donât you move to Sydney for me?â
âFair point.â He nodded and the smile faded. âI donât think Iâm ready for that yet. The city, I mean, not you. Iâm ready for you.â
âYet?â So he wasnât talking about his feelings for her or the concept of a relationship. âDoes that mean you might go back one day?â
âItâs not completely out of the question. Letâs cross over here.â Sunday traffic was minimal but in the next block cars were parked outside The Crown.
âJazz must be popular,â Mia said. âItâs not three, yet.â
âWe can have a coffee at Hannahâs first if you like.â
âOkay.â
The afternoon passed casually, first at Hannahâs with the coffee and a shared chocolate fudge brownie, then across the road at The Crown.
