By the time the Mini rolled into the driveway at four that afternoon, I had managed to read almost four whole months of Claraâs life. The more her life unfolded through the diary entries, the more I felt a genuine part of a life that had been extinguished for many years. I saw her as an old friend, as real as the ones sitting in a car which looked barely big enough for all of us to fit.
âCome on, lady,â Rick yelled through the passenger side window. The others peered out at me, Vicky wearing a Summer straw which barely fit on her head.
âIs there room?â I asked, clutching my towel. The car looked almost comical, small enough to be classed as nothing more than a toy.
âKate couldnât come,â Vicki called out as Rick hopped out to let me in through his door. He folded the back of the seat forward, then gestured for me to climb in.
âMaâam, your ride awaits.â I giggled a little, handed my towel to Doc sitting on the far side of the backseat and squeezed in.
The fit was a lot tighter than expected and I sat with half my butt raised on Vickyâs leg. I had to lean forward a little as the three of us didnât fit shoulder to shoulder. But with none of us caring and The Shirelles singing Will You Love Me Tomorrow over the radio, we settled in for the short ride to the beach.
The afternoon felt as if it could go on forever, the sun still high in the sky as we pulled up at the end of the track. As we climbed out, the sound of waves crashing onto nearby rocks filled the air, giving us the best soundtrack of all. Rick, Sam, and Doc ran ahead of us, with Vicky and I taking our time.
For me, there was a different sense of excitement in the air, and before I went looking to see if the bracelet was still in its hiding spot, I wanted to share my find with Vicky. She had, after all, told me about Clara to begin with and sounded genuinely interested when we visited the memorial on Pines Bluff.
âI found something you should know about,â I whispered as we neared the edge of the embankment leading down to the sand. âClara Youngâs diary.â
The revelation was enough for Vicky to stop in her tracks. She looked at me wide eyed and grabbed my arm.
âNo way. Are you serious?â I nodded.
âBeen reading all about her life.â
âWhat have you found? Anything juicy?â
âI havenât finished it all yet, but Iâve found out enough to know she was with a man.â
âWho? What was his name?â
âShe only calls him Ted.â
âTed? Thatâs it?â Again, I nodded.
âThatâs it. I donât want to skip ahead for fear of missing some vital clue, but so far, yup. Just Ted.â
We began walking again as the three boys hit the water, splashing each other excitedly as Doc went to wrestle Rick into the surf. Hearing them laughing spurred us on to get moving a bit quicker.
