Chapter 21

Oliver arrived at headquarters the following morning feeling less than rested having spent half the night re-thinking his conversation with Bob Wilson before concluding that his first instincts had been right. There was a message somewhere, but to prove it, he would have to go through all of the evidence again.

But he knew as he approached his desk that it would have to wait. In less than half an hour his class of graduates would be arriving to go through the results of their latest exercise. “Morning everyone, give me a few minutes to have a look through the results and then we’ll go over the thinking behind the clue before setting you the final exercise”.

As he walked around the table he noticed that, once again, David Crozier had brought a newspaper in with him and had laid it on the table in front of him, between himself and his partner Gordon Stewart. Oliver knew the gesture was meant to provoke some sort of reaction, but he ignored the temptation. The headline on the front of the newspaper, nevertheless, caught his eye as he walked past;
