In matter of fact, it was only twelve minutes later when Shapes opened the passenger door of the Anglia and slipped silently and slowly into the seat, his eyes fixed straight ahead. There was, thought Dykeman, a faint tremor about his Sergeant. Whatever could have happened? Ah, the mind boggled.

“Quite the woman, that Ivy Davey, wouldn’t you say, Shapes?” asked Dykeman, as he started up the engine.

There was no reply from Shapes, who continued to stare silently into the distance.

“Cat got your tongue, Shapes?” asked Dykeman, feigning a casual demeanour. “Come on, spill the beans. What happened in there?”

“She likes cats,” came the quietly spoken reply.

“And policemen,” sniggered Dykeman.

Shapes turned his head towards his boss, something of a frown on his face.

“Is she married?”

There was a short silence before Shapes replied. “No. Widowed.”

“So…” Dykeman nudged his Sergeant with his elbow.

“So what?”

“Did you ask her out? She looked pretty keen to me. Why do you think I went to so much trouble to make sure the two of you were along in that room?” Dykeman tittered. God, life was good right now.

“No.”

“No? I’m disappointed in you, Shapes. The poor woman looked desperate. She’ll have a proper complex now she couldn’t even get a grumpy old sod like you to ask her out.” Feeling rather deflated, Dykeman pushed the car into gear and pulled away behind a passing lorry.

“She asked me,” announced Shapes in a matter-of-fact manner, his gaze fixed on the road ahead.

“Do what?” asked the stunned Inspector, fumbling second gear. “She asked you out. And tell me you accepted, Shapes. Please, tell me you accepted.

“I did,” smiled his Sergeant.

Dykeman wasn’t quite sure how he managed to keep control of the car at that point as he began laughing uncontrollably, his whole body shaking, and his eyes filled with tears of joy.
