Cary was insane. This means (1) that he no longer knew the difference between right and wrong in many matters and would have been incapable of doing right if he did know; (2) that he was a danger to himself and others and likely to cause a public scandal; and (3) that he was not responsible for unlawful acts which were the products of his mental illness. Therefore it was necessary to place him in a hospital under the supervision of experienced doctors, nurses, and attendants in order to protect society and to protect him from himself. Insanity, however, is only a legal term, and has no standing as a medical word, though it is still used as though it had by many people. In fact, even legal authorities are not agreed as to the definition of insanity, so that (1), (2), and (3) above are all legal definitions, which vary from state to state and with different tribunals.
