The following week, all discussions about the rescue was suddenly condensed to one table in the hall, which had been reserved for the specific and detailed assignments.
Everything came together from all the research theyâd done, and only certain maps and models were used. Both blue- and green-robed servants surrounded the table alongside her and Sethorn, offering suggestions and ideas to make the rescue as smooth as possible.
Uraya was glad that they were finally at this stage. Not that she wasnât grateful for the level of research conducted, it was pretty impressive how many things had to be considered that hadnât seemed relevant to her before.
âZendyor said that the blue ember takes longer to destroy, but dragon fire can destroy it,â Sethorn confirmed.
Uraya nodded, exhaling a long breath in relief. The ember was the major worry for herâit was the thing that had restricted her freedom in so many ways.
âThat means we can plan the actual rescue, but we need to know exactly what weâre going to find once we get there.â He turned to Uraya. âLast time you told me that it was unlikely that anyone else had survived, but your friend would have. Why is that?â
âThe queen has been very particular about how she targeted that province,â Uraya explained. âIt would have been difficult for anyone to survive what she was doing.â
âWhat was she doing?â one servant asked.
âWell, there was never ember in that region at all. It isnât a natural occurrence, even with the ongoing war,â Uraya said. âShe placed it there, surrounding us so that we couldnât flee and then kept closing it in on us. We couldnât escape. People died. And of course, people tried to escape. She has killed most of them, but has kept the ember the same circumference now for years.â
âBut I donât understand how you would know that,â one of the servants said, quizzical. âDid you monitor this region as a warden?â
âAnd how do you know your friend is alive?â another steward said.
âHeâs really resourceful,â Uraya said. âItâs been a while, but thereâs no way the queen would kill him.â
Sethorn straightened. âWhat did you say?â
âI said that itâs been a while, but heâs really resourceful. He will be able toââ
Sethorn rounded the table, bearing down on her, his body tense.
âWhat is it?â she said, alarmed.
âYour friend is female.â
Uraya shook her head. âNo. I never said my friend was female. I never said my friend was male either. I just said I have a friend who needs rescuing.â
âThen who is this friend?â
Uraya was silent for a moment. She hadnât talked specifically about the details of who Tivv was to her for good reason. And she didnât see enough of a reason now. âHeâs just someone who is very important to me.â
Sethornâs growl deafened everyone at the table. His fists clenched, and a bitter, harsh edge embraced his scent. The servants backed away, their eyes wide in terror.
âHow important?â he thundered
A nervous tremble appeared in Urayaâs stomach. âWhat is the difference?â
âWe are rescuing him, so we should know who the fuck he is.
