“Candles for sale!” A young woman’s voice caught Devan’s attention, candles were good gifts for a fiancee. He walked over to the tables, sniffing several before he found one he thought she would like, sweet berries rising up to caress his nose.

“How much for this one? I like the sweet smell of it.”

The lady smiled, “Juniper is a sweet scent indeed. Four luks, please.” The Lord pulled up five and exchanged them for the candle.

She wrapped it up with a red bow perfectly balanced. He thought it would be a nice wedding gift for her, a new light for their new life together. He wasn’t ready to cut off his hair, but it was tradition and his mother was always a stickler for traditions. His father had done it when he married Rose and now it would be his turn. They would not be attending however, duties were too busy in Dejan for the Jarl to leave, almost ever. The city was a wreck, with low lives and thieves running around.

And then there was the Crows Crown. Led by a ruthless leader, some of the worst people served him. Devan had problems with one of them specifically. A ruthless assassin by the name of Nicholas Wolf.

No one had seen his face, no more than his verdant eyes shone through his black mask that covered everything up to his nose. Even his hair was black and with the rain - it was always slicked back. Devan knew that this was the wolf that the woman was speaking of, he almost had the chance to kill him earlier.

Wolf had taken the one thing in the world that mattered to Devan.

His brother.

Devan’s older brother was being primed to take over, the man being six years older than him. Daeric was sixteen at the time and would have taken over in less than two years. He had done some questionable things, yes, but he was a good leader and he would have made an amazing Jarl or even King. Daeric would be the one here looking for a bride, not Devan.

Devan was twelve when he saw the shadowy figure slip through his bedroom window, assuming that the young Prince was asleep and into his brother’s room. His brother was found with his throat slit only moments later. He only saw the eyes of the murderer, a boy no older than fourteen, but they haunted him for the rest of his life. Devan would never forget those glowing orbs of pure green, nor could he. Some nights when he thrashed and shook with night terrors - it was those eyes that haunted him.

As he grew older, he vowed to take down the Crows Crown and kill all the members in a public execution so that Dejan would never have to worry about assassins like these again. It didn’t matter if people employed them, they would be just as guilty if caught.

He was interrupted from his thoughts by her warm hand on his arm, Cress watching his face.
