"Is it really like this all the way to Jam-Pur?" Bryson was nearly out of questions for the first time in four days.
"The wastes are like this all the way to Jam-Pur."
"The land is, I don't know, all chopped up. It looks like it exploded out of the ground in all directions."
"Do you know the story of The Breaking of the World?" Peter asked.
"That's nothing but a fairy tale, Lakeman." Jardine laughed.
"Maybe," Peter replied, "but it tells the tale of how the world was changed in the Great War at the end of the First Age. Mountains were raised that never stood before, the earth was torn, and the rift valley was created where the Estonan River runs. This area, the wastes, was once called the Emerald Fields and was the most beautiful of all the lands. It was destroyed in the war of good versus evil in a horrible battle."
"All well and good, Lakeman." The lieutenant was smiling wide now. "At least if you believe in fairy tales. Next you will be telling us that wizards, dragons, Dwarves, Goblins, and Elves exist!"
"He does believeâ" Bryson started to say.
"That these are simply fairy tales, Lieutenant. I would not presume to say those things are real," Peter interrupted. "Everyone knows those creatures are blasphemy in the eyes of the Church. To speak of such things is clearly forbidden."
"That it is, Corporal." Jardine looked to the heavens and made the sign of the Trinity. "The gods know that there is evil in the world, but it lies in the hearts of men not in magical creatures."
The three rode along in silence until Jardine called out it was time to turn off the road and set up camp.
"This site looks like it is well used, even though it is not in sight of the road," Peter noted.
"There are not many sites with water in these parts, I'm afraid," Jardine explained. "I doubt we will have company tonight since we've seen no one on the road for the last four days. No watch needed again, so enjoy your sleep. Tomorrow we will start a watch rotation."
Dinner was uneventful and Bryson kept a small fire going afterward to ward off the chill. The night was clear with no moon, and though it would be cold, there would be stars.
"Bank that fire, Bryson," Jardine ordered. "We will want hot coffee in the morning. It's another six days to Jam-Pur, so we will get an early start."
