Moving swiftly, Talyn and Cuinn came out the back of the warehouse and circled the block. Talyn led the way, one hand on the knife at her back, eyes scanning the way ahead for any movement. The streets were dark and empty, her sight limited by the curtain of falling rain soaking through her clothes and hair.

They circled the dark streets surrounding the warehouse, seeing nothing out of place. Talyn made sure to scan what she could see of the rooftops too, but apart from the rain, nothing moved around them.

Eventually Cuinn glanced at her, questioning.

“I think we’re clear,” she murmured.

They came up behind Petro and his associate, catching the murmur of their soft conversation. At the sight of them, Zamaril and Halun emerged from where he’d been waiting in a nearby alley.

Petro looked taken aback by the number of people with the Shadowhawk, his gaze lingering curiously on their masks. “I was surprised to hear from you, Shadowhawk. We were worried that something had happened.”

“I got hurt on that last job,” Cuinn replied. “Took me a while to get back on my feet, but I’m good to go now.”

“Glad to hear it.” Relief ringed Petro’s voice, but he glanced warily at Talyn and the others. “You brought help.”

“Thought we might need it,” Cuinn said. “Don’t worry, they can be trusted. I hope you’re being careful, Petro.”

His eyes darkened in concern. “Do you really think it was Vengeance behind those murders like the Wolves do?”

Cuinn shook his head. “I don’t know, but either way, we all need to be careful.”

“Is there any chance there’s an ambush waiting for us on the ship?” Talyn muffled her voice as best she could. “We didn’t spot anything on our way here.”

Petro shook his head. “We’ve had our eye on it since before dusk. Nobody has rowed out there apart from crew. Plus six Falcons have been on board since it arrived. They changed shift at dusk.”

She looked at Cuinn, matched his frown. Where were they? It was odd that Vengeance wouldn’t take a prime opportunity like this to come after them again.

“Or they weren’t behind the recent murders, and like you assumed, are too busy trying to keep together what’s left of their gang while Falcons and Patrol are hunting them all over the city ,” Sari murmured.

Talyn nodded slightly. “Then who murdered the family ?”

“We should move.” Petro glanced up at the sky. “We’ve got some boats ready to row out—a friend organised that for us earlier today. The rain will provide good cover.”

“Good. Row for the port side.” Talyn glanced at Zamaril.

Petro nodded and headed off. Talyn caught Corrin’s gaze from the roof above and made a few signals telling him to stay where he was to watch for an ambush at their rear before following along behind.

Talyn, Halun, Zamaril and Cuinn clambered into one long rowboat, while Petro and his friends took another, and three other men materialised to row a third. A tense quarter-turn followed in which Talyn kept glancing between the sky and the docks, hoping nobody would appear to notice the boats rowing out.
