CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Jeff rested his elbows on his desk, rubbing his temples with small circular motions.

“Interesting morning?” I asked, taking the chair across from him.

“You could say that. Information is coming in fast and furious, but it’s so tangled up I need to think it through. What can I do for you Jackie?”

“I wanted to touch base with you about my conversation with Carleen Foster over coffee...”

“Oh right. Thanks so much for doing that. It was quick thinking on Murph’s part. She’s quite a character, isn’t she?”

“I agree with that. You should take time later to watch the interview with the reporter. They’ll probably put it up on the station webpage. I think she agreed to talk to me because I said I didn’t think it was an accident.”

“Is that true?” Jeff asked.

“That’s the way I’m leaning. But I’ll still give the accidental shooting a twenty percent chance. Back to Carleen. She told me that Fred talked to Earl about covering for him at the tournament late on Saturday night. He said he didn’t feel well.”

Jeff pulled a notepad in front of him. “I might as well write down the points you are telling me and compare with what Fred and Carleen said at their interviews.”

“She went on to say her family thinks she should let the dust settle and not stir things up. But she’s fired up and said she knows Earl had the goods on Fred. Knew his sin and all about the mess he’d gotten himself into.”

“Was she more specific as to what the mess she was referring to?”

“She implied she had specific information, but didn’t tell me. I didn’t want to push her too much, but encouraged her to tell you everything. She claimed Fred set Earl up. In very colorful language she explained Fred tempted him with being able to enjoy playing in a big tournament.”

“That agrees with what she told me. I wish Earl had let Junene know who he was.”

“Carleen claimed that before he died, Earl told her he tried, but there was so much confusion at the registration table. She figured it was a half try. Why bring it up? This was his chance to act the big guy. The semi famous golf professional. Earl had always looked up to Fred, so in his mind, for that one day at least, he’d be somebody. She said that Fred played on that angle all the time with Earl and with other people, too. She emphasized that now he was just a big fish in a shrinking, drying up pond.”

“This seems to follow with what she told me,” Jeff said. “She also hinted at a nefarious action by Fred.”

“The fact Fred fired the shot that killed his cousin?” I nodded. “She implied it. But then said she’d give you an earful of the truth. At least Carleen’s truth. What did she tell you, Jeff?”

“She said that Fred’s power and lifestyle were in danger of being exposed as being fraudulent by Earl. That he’d been cooking the town’s books.
