CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Patrick had woken me up off the couch at some point during the night and gotten me to bed. The four a.m. alarm jolted me awake. Immediately I put my feet on the ground while thinking of the list of to-dos on my plate.

There was no time to dillydally either.

“You’re going to stay home today,” I told Pepper as I pulled my hoodie over top of my head. “I have a lot to do today, and I don’t want to have Bunny feel responsible for you.”

When Pepper realized I wasn’t getting the bag I took for him every day, he went over to his bed in front of the wood-burning stove, only there wasn’t a fire, and he lay down. His chin rested on the edge of the bed, and his eyes were focused on me as if he were waiting for me to pick up his bag so he could dart to the door.

Patrick was still asleep, and I didn’t want to wake him or Sassy, so I scribbled a note for him about my decision not to take Pepper today, leaving it on the counter with his to-go mug on top of it. That way I knew he’d see it.

I grabbed my keys off the hook next to the door. Pepper’s chin shot up. His little ears were alert, but when I started to pull the door shut, he laid his chin back down on the edge of the bed.

It tugged at my heart to not take him. Leaving him at home was a rare occasion, but it was best.

I had driven my car to work instead of biking because I needed to go to the bank and back out to the hunting cabin, which made it much quicker to drive.

The morning at the Bean Hive started off like every other morning. I’d gotten there first and started all the brewing along with the menu items. I’d run the industrial pots down to the Cocoon Inn so their guests could enjoy some delicious coffee.

I left Bunny at the coffeehouse since traffic had been slower than any other time I’d ever recalled. There was no doubt the crimes on the boardwalk had made tourists and citizens leery to come down and do some shopping.

This was very concerning to me as a business owner.

Bunny was just fine without me. She more than likely preferred it, so she could sit down and talk to the customers, if we got any more today. They loved her. It was like coming to have a cup of coffee with your granny.

The Honey Springs National Bank was a typical bank. The old concrete floor played a huge role in the ability of your voice to echo and bounce off the walls. When I came in the door, I headed straight over to the two large glass offices on the right, giving the employees at the teller line a wave.

“Roxy.” Evan Rich sat behind his desk. He offered a friendly smile. “Is that what I think it is?” he asked about the Bean Hive coffee cup and to-go bag in my hands.
