CHAPTER TWELVE

KINSEY DIALED 911 after she looked around for a few minutes. A large purse was next to her body. The only problem was it still looked full. Kinsey wanted to take a peek, but she decided against it. Bea answered on the first call.

“Kinsey, I don’t have time to talk, call if you have an emergency,” Bea gave a shout.

“It. Is. An. Emergency!” Kinsey shouted back into the phone. “I’m at Lewis & Clark Park on 5th and Lewis & Clark Parkway. There’s another body. It’s Stephanie Burns this time.”

Kinsey didn’t hear anything more out of Bea Ziegler. Just a couple of sentences that included, “Are you sure,” and “someone will be there.” Of course, she stayed on the line until the police showed up. Chief Padgett and Brody arrived fifteen minutes later. Chief Padgett stepped out of an official black-and-white Prairie Brook police cruiser. Brody was in the unmarked Dodge Charger.

Chief Padgett was in the same black-and-blue uniform as before. Brody wore a gray jacket, green polo shirt, and slacks. The color worked well with his green hazel eyes as well as his sandy brown hair, even though his shirt was more of a light or mint green color. His gun and badge were still in the same place. She could tell by the look on Brody’s face that he wasn’t happy to see her there.

“Don’t even say anything, Red!” Brody rested two fingers on his temple as he spoke. “Let me guess! Stephanie had information about Preston and told you to meet her here.” He continued massaging his temple and scrunched his lips.

“I guess that’s why you’re the detective,” Kinsey grinned, “Well done, Sherlock Brody. Yes, I was meeting Stephanie, but when I showed up, she was dead. She didn’t tell me anything.”

They waited an extra half an hour for the coroner’s van from Eden County to show up, as well as some techs from the Sioux Falls Crime Lab. A few crime scene investigators came out and took some photographs and grabbed Stephanie’s purse. They looked around and found a small handgun in the bushes.

Angie Thompson took a few minutes to examine the body. Then hauled Stephanie off in a body bag. Chief Padgett shook his head and said, “I don’t know what I’m going to tell Andy. I got my new truck from him.”

“I’m sure he won’t be happy to see me either, Dale,” Brody gulped. “He and Dad were rivals. I’ll figure it out later.”

Kinsey stood and watched as they worked. She found something in the grass. It looked like a pen from Preston’s office. That’s when she opened up the lid and realized it had a secret flash drive in the head. She quickly pocketed it before anyone noticed. This had to be Stephanie’s information. Should I give this to Brody? Kinsey thought. It will be the right thing to do. No, I’ll check it out first to make sure it has something to do with this, and then I’ll give it to Brody right away.
