Chapter 16

I asked Sheriff Stangle if Alex “the Slugger” Kramer could come with me, and he said he would welcome the help. We followed his Bronco down Main Street and parked next to him in two diagonal spots available in front of the Pritchard Hotel. We followed the sheriff inside, and he stopped for a moment at the front desk.

“Anything suspicious, Mrs. Hamtrodden?”

“In the ten minutes you’ve been gone? Nope.”

“Then we will continue to keep my being here a secret.”

She leaned forward. “But won’t word get out?”

“It will,” Sheriff Stangle said. “But I’d prefer it not get out until tomorrow at the exact moment of my choosing.”

She looked slightly horrified, and I didn’t know what to make of it. All Stangle said when we’d left the bar was that it was important, and we’d understand when we got there. We followed him up to the third floor and then down a hallway until we reached Room 307. He put a key in the door, the light turned green, and he opened it. He turned to both of us and put a finger to his lips. I shot Alex a glance. What were we, cat burglars?

Stangle opened the door, I followed Alex into the room, and Stangle shut and locked the door behind me. Alex made a funny noise, and once I’d come up next to him, I realized why. He was staring at the bed. Hannah Walters was lying back on her back, her head propped on a pillow, her face turned slightly to the side. Her eyes were horrifyingly open, yet without a trace of life. Hannah Walters, the successful producer for Weather America, was dead.
