The ladies met Heath and Rashid in the hotel lobby. They chose to wear spaghetti strap tops, ankle-length skirts, and flip flops. Renee got a carnation from the gift shop and put it in her hair. Rashid opened the door for Brenda and Renee. He sat in the back with Brenda. Renee sat in the front seat while Heath stood by the door, looking at the building.
Renee looked around to see the issue. âWhatâs wrong, Heath?â
âOh, I just thought you might be wearing that cute little purple outfit with the necklace I saw you in the first time we met.â
Renee scrunched her face and tilted her head. âI donât own any necklaces or a purple outfit.â She thought back to four weeks earlier. âWhen we met, I had stopped to get gas on my way home.â
âRight, and you were in the cute purple outfit with the charm necklace.â
âYou mean my jogging outfit and work badge?â
Heath nodded. âYes, but I guess I was so eager to meet you that I didnât realize you were in uniform. My bad.â
He shut the door and drove them to his cousinsâ home. It was in an older neighborhood that had ranch houses. The largest one on the block appeared to be 1,000 square feet. Many had metal clothesline posts in the backyard. Three of the neighbors had chicken coops and no grass. Several barefooted children ran out of the house, causing the wooden screen door to slam. Heath and Rashid scooped up four of the smaller children and introduced them to the ladies.
âYouâre pretty,â said a girl who appeared no older than four.
âThank you.â Brenda lightly touched her nose. âYou are just adorable.â
The child reached out to be held. Brenda followed the others into the home, carrying the child who had flattered her on her hip. Boiling cabbage and heat from the kitchen were the first things smelled and felt inside the two-bedroom home. Renee noticed that there was one bathroom. She asked Heath if she could freshen up. He called his sister, Camille, to assist.
âOh, I just need to check my hair and use the little girlsâ room,â Renee explained.
âWell, if you need to fix your hair, you can use the mirror in my bedroom. Leave the door open so everybody can watch you.â
Renee felt herself blink in surprise.
âNot that you might steal or nothing. Itâs just to keep you from being tempted.â
âI understand. You donât know me.â She stepped toward the bathroom again.
âWait. You canât go in there. Itâs for family only.â She opened the back door. âWe rented a port-o-potty for this weekend. So you and your friend have your own toilet just like you do back home.â
Pee outside? I would understand if they didnât have indoor plumbing. Renee stared at the blue plastic object sitting in the yard. The only other things that stood out were the grill, about twenty feet to the right, the chickens, and a large tree with a tire swing. Make the best of the weekend. We were invited as guests.
